School Screening Chart
The school screening chart makes vision screening at school entry quick, easy, and reliable, without the child needing to know capital letters. Research has shown that at this age less than fifty percent of children are confident with capital letters.
Crowded pictures have been shown to correlate with letters for accuracy whilst being more appropriate and more appropriate and easier for the agre group.
The test is simple, very quick to perform, and does not require a long attention span. Ask the child to read all the pictures in one vertical row and confirm their linear acuity at the smallest size with crowded pictures in the centre.
The chart is double sided with four single and two crowded options to test each eye with different pictures to avoid the child memorising the answers.
Normative values for letter tests suggests a screening pass criteria of 0.200 (3/4.8 or 10/16 Snellen) to allow for children who simply find letter testing too difficult. This could mean that children with a true visual defect cannot be differentiated from those with normal vision but poor concentration, and their defect might remain undetected.
Normative values for crowded pictures for children aged four and five years is 0.050 LogMAR (3/3 or 10/10 part Snellen) in each eye with an intraocular difference of no more than 0.025 (one picture), so reducing the occurrence of false negatives.
The Screening Chart measures vision in nine LogMAR and Snellen sizes at a three metre (ten feet) testing distance.
