Flipper Lenses

Ref Code: FL1, FL4

These plastic, colour-coded flippers are used for the diagnosis and treatment of accommodative defects. They comprise binocular spherical plus/minus lenses that can quickly be flipped from plus to minus during testing.

Diagnostic use: +2.00/-2.00 flipper to determine the accommodative flexibility, which is recorded as the number of times it is possible to flip from +2.00 to -2.00 in sixty seconds, while maintaining a clear image.

Therapeutic use: Poor accommodative flexibility can be improved with practice using first +/-1.00 flippers then with lenses of increasing strength.

Used binocularly, the flippers exercise positive and negative relative accommodation. The patient maintains fusion at 40cm while reading and adjusting his accommodation to overcome the plus or minus lenses. Minus lenses exercise positive relative accommodation. Plus lenses exercise negative relative accommodation.

Flippers can also be helpful in squint/phoria treatments in the same way as stereograms. Minus lenses exercise -ve relative convergence (as with distance stereograms) to treat esophoria etc. Plus lenses exercise +ve relative convergence (as with near stereograms) to treat exophoria.
